As an experienced design-build company in Minnesota, the Excel Builders team has gotten its fair share of questions about remodeling over the years. We strive to ensure our clients know what to expect during the home remodeling process, which is why we’re always happy to answer any questions that come up. Keep reading for answers to 10 of the frequently asked questions we get!
When is the best time to remodel?
The short answer? When it works for you! That said, there are certain times of the year when remodeling might make more sense. For example, a kitchen remodel is often less stressful during the summer months when you can replace stovetop cooking with a grill. Home additions and deck footings are also much easier to complete when the ground has thawed.

How much does a remodel cost?
Unfortunately, there is no concrete number. The cost of home remodeling depends on a variety of factors, including:
- Type of remodel (kitchen, bathroom, basement, etc.)
- Project scope
- Where you live
- Your remodeling contractor
- Cost of materials
- And more
The best way to determine how much your project will cost is to request a remodeling estimate — or two or three. That way, you can compare costs and how they align with your budget.
How long does a typical home remodeling project take?
The answer to this question really depends on the type of remodel and your contractor’s schedule. Larger scale remodels like a main floor renovation will take longer than a standard bathroom remodel. Supply chain issues may also cause delays that push project timelines back. Before your project begins, your contractor will give you a rough estimate of what to expect.
Can I live in my home during a home renovation?
In most cases, the answer is yes, but it really comes down to personal preference. Although we try our very best to limit the amount of dust and debris inside your home, remodeling can be messy. You may also deal with disruptions in your normal routine, especially if completing a kitchen or bathroom remodel.
How do I finance a home remodeling project?
There are quite a few ways to pay for a remodel. If saving the money to pay for the project outright isn’t an option, financing is your next bet. Popular financing options include securing a home improvement loan, Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC), or home equity loan. Depending on where you live and your home, you may also be eligible for home improvement loans through government programs.
How do I choose a home remodeling company?
Finding the right remodeling company means doing your research. Don’t just pick the contractor with the lowest estimate. Ask for details about their process, experience, insurance and certifications, and warranties. It’s also helpful to compare estimates, read online reviews, and even check out their BBB rating. At the end of the day, it’s essential to work with a company you trust.

Why is design so important in a home remodeling project?
Design is one of the most crucial elements of any remodeling project. It sets the tone for the entire project and influences how the remodel looks and where hidden elements like ducts and plumbing will reside. In short, design is not something you can wing and hope for the best. If you’re not ready or willing to make a financial investment in the design, you’re not ready to start a remodeling project.

How do we communicate throughout the home remodeling project?
Communication guidelines vary from one home remodeling company to the next. At Excel Builders, we try to keep the flow of communication as clear and concise as possible.
Our designer, Christine, and I are the primary points of contact for all questions, concerns, or changes made during the project. This keeps the project moving at a steady pace and prevents misunderstandings.
What is a change order?
A change order occurs when the scope, duration, or price changes during the remodel. There are typically two types of change orders:
- Hidden or discovered change orders
- Self-induced change orders
Hidden change orders may occur when an unexpected problem occurs during the project, such as removing bathroom tile and discovering water damage in the walls or subfloor. Self-induced change orders are any changes or additions requested by the client after the project gets underway.
