A Multi-Use Basement Remodel
Once upon a time, you had to choose between a “man cave” or a family room. Or between a home gym or a playroom. It’s time to abandon that way of thinking. Gone are the days of single-purpose basements. If you have the space, and you’re considering a basement remodel, you can make it work for the whole family.
In the beginning stages of your basement design, it’s a great idea to let every member of your family have a say in the basement remodel. Depending on your needs, you can assign each family member a certain corner of the room, or maybe you can put up a few walls to physically divide the space.
Here are some of our favorite basement remodel projects:
Movie Area
With a decent surround sound system, a projector, and a screen, you can turn part of your basement into the perfect movie area. Or, in lieu of the projector and screen, a large flat-screen TV can have the same effect. Throw in some theater-style seating, recliners, couches, or even bean bag chairs for ultra-comfortable viewing. Your movie area can double as a TV lounge for game days or Netflix marathons.
Home Gym
Going to the gym during the winter can be a huge hassle. You have to bundle up over your workout attire, warm up your car, maybe scrape off some ice or snow, drive to your destination, and then turn around and do the same thing again. Why go through all of that trouble when you can have a home gym in your own basement? Whether you’re into treadmill running, weightlifting, or yoga, you can make the space work for you.
Bar Area
Whether you like to entertain frequently or have a drink after a long week, a bar area in your basement can be a great addition. Maybe a wine fridge and a couple of shelves may do the trick. Or you could really spice things up with a wet bar, complete with your favorite beer on tap and a fridge for snacks. If you have the room, a foosball or pool table can really add to the bar/lounge experience.
Kids Area
What are your kids’ favorite hobbies and interests? Maybe you could turn their area of the basement into an art studio. Maybe you create a reading nook with comfy chairs and bookshelves. Maybe you build and indoor playground for your active little ones. Ask your kids for their input and research ideas online to create a play area for your kids that they will get the most use out of. For example, we recently completed a basement remodel with an indoor hockey room for the kids.
Home Office
If you work from home frequently, your basement may be the ideal space for a secluded home office. You could even design an office or workspace for your kids to do their homework without distractions.
