When it comes to remodeling your home, picking the right contractor is crucial. There are plenty of things to consider, from experience and design style to the cost and projected timelines. However, when choosing a home remodeling company, it’s also helpful to consider what happens behind the scenes — aka, the people dedicated to completing your remodel. Keep reading to learn more about the team behind a design-build company.
What is a Design-Build Construction Company?
Before diving into the various roles at a design-build company like Excel Builders, let’s recap how design-build compares to a traditional remodeling contractor. To put it simply, a design-build company is a one-stop-shop for home remodeling and construction. Unlike traditional remodeling companies, a design-build company handles both the design and execution of a home remodeling project. This saves a homeowner from having to hire separate companies to handle their project and helps the remodel run smoother.
Working with a design-build company offers many benefits, including:
- Better quality service
- Accelerated project timelines
- Streamlined process
- Better design and unified vision
- High-quality craftsmanship
- Improved communication
- Accountability
Who Works on a Design-Build Team?
Every design-build construction company is different. However, most consist of a builder, interior designers, and carpenters. Depending on the company’s structure and scope of its services, a design-build team may also include an in-house architect and engineer.
Compared to many other design-build companies, Excel Builders has a unique structure. In addition to our design-build services, we offer custom cabinets, millwork, and furniture through our sister company, Artisan Cabinet Company. We also have a much smaller team than most design-build companies. While everyone has designated roles, our team works collaboratively with both divisions, and each person takes on additional duties as needed. I’ve outlined the different roles and responsibilities of our design-build team below.
Remodeling Contractor
I (Trent) serve as the remodeling contractor, working on both the remodeling and custom cabinetry side. As the project lead, it’s my duty to oversee each project and communicate with our clients. Along with our designer, I act as a point of contact for any questions, concerns, or changes made to the project. Although each day may look a little different, my primary responsibilities include:
- Client communication
- Project management
- Assisting the carpenters
- Delivering materials to job sites
- Construction
Interior Designer
As the Lead Designer, Christine is responsible for translating our clients’ needs and wants into a viable design concept — but her work doesn’t stop there. Christine wears many hats at Excel Builders, working diligently behind the scenes to make sure every project runs smoothly. Some of her daily tasks include:
- Design consultations & creation
- Project management
- Quality control
- Client communication
Since we often incorporate custom cabinetry and millwork into the projects we complete, Christine also works closely with the craftsmen in our in-house cabinet shop.
Operations Manager
Our Operations Manager, Cory, acts as a liaison between Christine and me. This extra level of communication helps us ensure our remodeling projects are completed on time and as designed.
Carpenters
There are three carpenters on our design-build team. Our lead carpenter, Matt, works in both the remodeling and custom cabinetry division of the company. Carpenters are responsible for executing the design concept, starting with demolition all the way through to project completion. Although the work they do depends on the individual project, it may include framing out a space, constructing and installing cabinets, flooring installation, and other tasks.
